Defcon Conference Announces AI Cyber Challenge Winners and New Experiences
This year at the Defcon conference, DARPA and ARPAH enthusiastically announced the winners of the AI Cyber Challenge (AICC) and presented a new experience for participants. The AICC is a two-year competition aimed at developing automated cyber reasoning systems capable of identifying and correcting vulnerabilities in critical code for our national security and daily life. The prizes are substantial: $4 million for first place, $3 million for second, and $1.5 million for third. The stakes are high and the challenge is colossal, as the systems we all rely on, such as power plants, hospitals, water systems, banks, and more, are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Current security cannot keep up.
This year, we have seen massive intrusions into our telecommunications systems, attacks on our supermarkets leading to supply chain issues and empty shelves, and attacks on hospitals and healthcare providers affecting patient care. The AIC semi-final competition proved that AI systems are capable not only of identifying but also successfully correcting real vulnerabilities. The goal is to create a cyber-secure world.
At Defcon, the winners of the final competition will be announced from the main stage. Throughout the weekend, participants will be able to discover the details of the competition and the technologies of the teams through the AICC experience. This experience will include on-stage discussions, technical demonstrations, and opportunities to meet the teams and industry experts. The AICC teams will make their software open source after Defcon, demonstrating their commitment to creating innovative technologies and transferring them to the real world.
The AICC experience will allow participants to understand the cybersecurity stakes for five different critical infrastructure sectors. They will be able to immerse themselves in realistic cyberattacks on various sectors and discuss with experts the specific challenges and opportunities of each industry. Participants will also be able to explore the competition data, including the vulnerabilities and fixes identified and created by the competitors' systems. They will meet the essential industry partners of the competition and discover how to support the adoption of this technology.
Finally, DARPA and ARPAH will share more information about their cyber and AI portfolios. The goal is to encourage engagement and support for the adoption of this revolutionary technology. Together, we can create a safer future for all.
