US Justice Department Indicts 12 Chinese Individuals for Global Cyber Intrusions
The United States Department of Justice has announced the indictment of 12 Chinese individuals accused of more than a decade of cyber intrusions worldwide. Among them are eight employees of the company i-Soon, two officials from the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, and two other hackers belonging to the group APT27, also known as Silk Typhoon. This group targeted U.S. state and federal agencies, foreign ministries in Asia, Chinese dissidents, American media critical of the Chinese government, and recently the U.S. Treasury, which was compromised between September and December 2024. The hackers penetrated at least 400 Treasury computers and stole more than 3,000 files. The indictments reveal that some hackers operated with considerable autonomy, choosing their own targets before selling the stolen information to Chinese government clients.
