New Video from @ryan_phdsec: Tips for Starting in Cybersecurity in 2025

In this video, Ryan shares his advice for those looking to get started in the field of cybersecurity in 2025. He begins by emphasizing the importance of finding a specific area of interest and sticking to it, rather than spreading oneself too thin across many different topics, which can lead to boredom and loss of interest. He recommends focusing on a subject that you are passionate about and only diversifying when it becomes necessary to understand new concepts. Ryan proposes several steps to begin in cybersecurity. The first is to learn the OWASP Top 10, a list of the ten most critical vulnerabilities for web application security. He suggests using the TryHackMe platform, which offers tutorials and walkthroughs to facilitate learning. This step allows one to familiarize themselves with interesting vulnerabilities and progress quickly, even if the concepts may seem strange at first. Next, Ryan advises learning the basics of web development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These skills are essential for reading and understanding code, which will be useful in the future. He mentions that free courses are available on YouTube to acquire these skills. Another crucial aspect is understanding networks. Although some may find this subject boring, it is essential to master the basics of networking. Ryan admits that this was a difficult part for him, but he insists on its importance. For those who want to go further, Ryan recommends getting into pentesting (penetration testing) using platforms like Hack The Box and TryHackMe. He also suggests following the free courses of Cyber Mentor on YouTube, which can then lead to paid certifications. These courses cover everything you need to know about networks and basic vulnerabilities, as well as executing code remotely on servers. Ryan emphasizes that the world of cybersecurity is vast and that everyone will find an area that interests them, whether it's pentesting, networking, Active Directory, mobile device testing, or websites. By following his recommendations, beginners will be able to discover their specific interests and progress in this field. In conclusion, this video offers a comprehensive guide for those wishing to get started in cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of finding an area of interest and sticking to it while acquiring essential skills.
