Cybersecurity Channel Highlights Smart TV Privacy Issues, Espionage Equipment Seizure, and VPN Extension Removal
The channel @seytonic discusses three main topics in cybersecurity. Firstly, smart TVs (brands like Hisense, LG, TCL) use Automated Content Recognition (ACR) technology to capture screenshots and audio/video fingerprints every second (up to 10 ms for LG), to identify viewed content and monetize it through targeted advertising. Five lawsuits have been filed by the State of Texas against these manufacturers for lack of informed consent, with a temporary injunction blocking Hisense. Opt-out options exist but are hard to find.
Secondly, Polish police intercepted three Ukrainian nationals carrying espionage equipment: Flipper Zero, bug detectors, 4G cameras, portable routers, and a possible signal jammer. Although most of the equipment is not illegal, their accumulation led to an investigation.
Lastly, the UrbanVPN Proxy extension (5.5 million users) was removed from the Chrome Web Store after being modified to intercept conversations with AI chatbots, collecting prompts and responses via a man-in-the-middle attack before sending them to its servers. The functionality was justified as protection against malicious links but violated Google's policies.
