Epic Systems, a leading provider of electronic health records (EHR) systems, has filed a lawsuit in California against data brokers and other entities accused of posing as medical facilities to obtain nearly 300,000 patient records. The complaint alleges that these companies illegally monetized the data, including selling it to lawyers seeking participants for class action lawsuits. The scale of the fraud could be much larger, and most patients are likely unaware that their data has been stolen.
