Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks still use legacy communication protocols designed for reliability and availability, lacking authentication mechanisms and data integrity. According to a recent guide from the CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), malicious actors with access to the OT network can impersonate devices, send unauthenticated commands, or modify messages in transit without detection. Although secure versions of these industrial protocols exist, their adoption remains limited. The CISA document explains the reasons for this underutilization.
