152 Malicious Chrome Extensions Disguised as Live Wallpapers Linked to PUP Distribution Network
CybersecurityMalwareAdwareBrowserExtensions
Cybersecurity researchers identified 152 Google Chrome extensions disguised as 'new tab live wallpaper' add-ons linked to a potentially unwanted program (PUP) distribution network. The extensions were published under 38 separate Chrome Web Store accounts and connected to three backend domains: tabplugins[.]com, yowgames[.]com, and chromewallpaper[.]com. Collectively, these extensions recorded 105,000 installations. The campaign primarily involved adware and fake traffic generation, though specific technical mechanisms were not detailed. No dates or CVE identifiers were provided in the reported findings.
