DC256: Growth and Evolution of a Huntsville-Based Hacker Community

DC256 is a Huntsville-based hacker community that emerged from a small group of cybersecurity enthusiasts, now grown to approximately 750 members over the past two years. The group organizes monthly meetups, including workshops like lock picking and technical talks—such as a Bluetooth hacking presentation modeled after DEF CON’s annual workshop. Originally led by volunteers, the group transitioned leadership and later pursued 501c3 nonprofit status to manage finances legally, though the process proved complex; they now operate under the UAH Invention to Innovation Center (I2C)’s nonprofit umbrella. Challenges include securing sponsors, advertising events, and sourcing speakers, but consistency—meeting at the same time and place monthly—has driven growth. DC256 has expanded into sub-groups like Tech Thursdays and now hosts BSides Rocket City, a local security conference.
