A mobile ad fraud scheme named Papyrus has been identified, leveraging a cluster of novel-reading apps to generate hidden browser traffic on users' phones. The apps, while displaying romance or fantasy stories, secretly load websites in an invisible browser window, autonomously clicking and scrolling to simulate ad engagement. The scheme is built around BootNova, a component linked to the fraudulent activity. Research by IAS Threat Lab uncovered the operation, though no specific victim count, financial impact, or affected app names were disclosed. The fraud exploits users' devices without their knowledge to inflate ad revenue through fake interactions.
