Researchers Uncover Over 100 Fraudulent Websites Distributing Malicious Chrome Extensions

Researchers from DomainTools have identified more than a hundred fraudulent websites distributing seemingly legitimate Chrome extensions since February 2024. These extensions, covering areas such as generative AI, VPNs, web analytics, and cryptocurrencies, appear to function correctly but spy on and take control of the browser in the background. The extensions contact remote servers to execute malicious actions while partially providing the promised functionalities.
