A new study has revealed that many commercial VPNs are secretly owned by Chinese companies. The study identified 20 VPN applications available to American users on Apple's App Store, whose Chinese ownership was not clearly disclosed. The ownership structure of these VPNs was often deliberately opaque, hidden behind layers of offshore shell companies. Researchers were able to determine Chinese ownership by gathering corporate documents from around the world.
