Squid Dominated the Oceans in the Late Cretaceous

A new study has revealed that squid dominated the oceans at the end of the Cretaceous period. Researchers have developed an advanced fossil discovery technique that fully digitizes rocks with all their fossils in 3D. Using this technique on rocks from the Late Cretaceous period from Japan, the team identified 1,000 fossilized cephalopod beaks, including 263 squid specimens and 40 previously unknown squid species. The number of squid fossils far exceeded those of bony fish and ammonites, extinct relatives of squid considered the most efficient swimmers of the Mesozoic era.
