Description
In Gentoo Portage before 3.0.47, there is missing PGP validation of executed code: the standalone emerge-webrsync downloads a .gpgsig file but does not perform signature verification. Unless emerge-webrsync is used, Portage is not vulnerable.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2016-20021
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2016-20021 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in Gentoo Portage before version 3.0.47 involves a missing PGP validation of executed code. Specifically, the standalone emerge-webrsync tool downloads a .gpgsig file but fails to perform signature verification. This oversight can lead to the execution of unverified and potentially malicious code.
Severity Evaluation:
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Impact: High
- Exploitability: High
The high CVSS score indicates a critical vulnerability that can be easily exploited with severe consequences. The lack of signature verification can allow attackers to inject malicious code, compromising the integrity and security of the system.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attack: An attacker can intercept the download process and replace the legitimate files with malicious ones.
- Malicious Repository: An attacker can set up a fake repository that serves malicious files, which
emerge-webrsyncwill download and execute without verification. - Supply Chain Attack: An attacker can compromise the legitimate repository or the distribution channel to inject malicious code.
Exploitation Methods:
- Code Injection: Attackers can inject malicious code into the downloaded files, which will be executed without verification.
- Privilege Escalation: If the
emerge-webrsynctool runs with elevated privileges, attackers can gain higher-level access to the system. - Data Exfiltration: Malicious code can be designed to exfiltrate sensitive data from the compromised system.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Gentoo Linux systems using Portage before version 3.0.47.
Software Versions:
- Gentoo Portage versions prior to 3.0.47.
Note: Systems that do not use the standalone emerge-webrsync tool are not vulnerable.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Update Portage: Upgrade to Portage version 3.0.47 or later, which includes the necessary fixes for signature verification.
- Disable
emerge-webrsync: If upgrading is not immediately possible, disable the use ofemerge-webrsyncto prevent unverified code execution.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Implement Strong Verification Mechanisms: Ensure that all downloaded files are verified using robust cryptographic methods.
- Regular Audits: Conduct regular security audits of the package management system and its components.
- Monitor Repositories: Continuously monitor the integrity of repositories and distribution channels.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The vulnerability highlights the critical importance of code verification in package management systems. It underscores the need for robust security practices in open-source projects and the potential risks associated with missing validation steps. The high CVSS score indicates the significant impact this vulnerability can have on affected systems, emphasizing the need for immediate remediation.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Technical Overview:
- Vulnerable Component:
emerge-webrsyncin Gentoo Portage. - Issue: Missing PGP validation of downloaded files.
- Consequence: Execution of unverified and potentially malicious code.
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Review logs for any unusual activity related to
emerge-webrsyncand package downloads. - Integrity Checks: Perform integrity checks on all downloaded files to ensure they have not been tampered with.
- Incident Response: If a compromise is detected, follow incident response procedures to contain and mitigate the impact.
