Description
Two heap-based buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the gwcfg_cgi_set_manage_post_data functionality of Yifan YF325 v1.0_20221108. A specially crafted network request can lead to a heap buffer overflow. An attacker can send a network request to trigger these vulnerabilities. This integer overflow result is used as argument for the malloc function.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2023-35967
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2023-35967 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability CVE-2023-35967 involves two heap-based buffer overflow issues in the gwcfg_cgi_set_manage_post_data functionality of Yifan YF325 v1.0_20221108. The severity of this vulnerability is rated at 9.8 on the CVSS scale, indicating a critical risk. This high score is due to the potential for remote code execution, which can lead to significant impacts such as data breaches, system compromise, and loss of service availability.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Network-Based Attack: An attacker can send a specially crafted network request to the vulnerable system, exploiting the buffer overflow vulnerabilities.
- Remote Code Execution (RCE): The buffer overflow can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code on the affected system, potentially leading to full system compromise.
Exploitation Methods:
- Crafted Network Request: An attacker can craft a malicious network request that triggers the buffer overflow in the
gwcfg_cgi_set_manage_post_datafunction. - Integer Overflow: The vulnerability involves an integer overflow that results in an incorrect argument being passed to the
mallocfunction, leading to a heap buffer overflow.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Yifan YF325 v1.0_20221108
Software Versions:
- The specific version mentioned is v1.0_20221108. It is crucial to verify if other versions of the Yifan YF325 software are also affected.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Patch Management: Apply the latest security patches provided by the vendor to mitigate the vulnerability.
- Network Segmentation: Isolate the affected systems from critical networks to limit the potential impact of an exploit.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to monitor for suspicious network activity that may indicate an attempt to exploit this vulnerability.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Regular Security Audits: Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and address potential security issues.
- Code Review: Implement rigorous code review processes to identify and fix buffer overflow vulnerabilities during the development phase.
- Security Training: Provide ongoing training for developers and IT staff on secure coding practices and vulnerability management.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of CVE-2023-35967 highlights the ongoing challenge of buffer overflow vulnerabilities in software systems. This type of vulnerability can have severe consequences, including unauthorized access, data breaches, and system compromise. The high CVSS score underscores the critical nature of this vulnerability and the importance of prompt mitigation.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Functionality Affected:
gwcfg_cgi_set_manage_post_data - Vulnerability Type: Heap-based buffer overflow
- Root Cause: Integer overflow leading to incorrect
mallocargument
Exploitation Steps:
- Craft Malicious Request: An attacker crafts a network request designed to trigger the buffer overflow.
- Send Request: The attacker sends the crafted request to the vulnerable system.
- Trigger Overflow: The request causes an integer overflow, leading to a heap buffer overflow.
- Execute Code: The attacker can then execute arbitrary code on the affected system.
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Monitor system logs for unusual activity or errors related to the
gwcfg_cgi_set_manage_post_datafunction. - Memory Analysis: Use memory analysis tools to detect and investigate heap buffer overflows.
- Incident Response: Have an incident response plan in place to quickly address and mitigate any detected exploitation attempts.
