Description
An issue was discovered in libremote_dbg.so on TRENDnet TV-IP1314PI 5.5.3 200714 devices. Filtering of debug information is mishandled during use of popen. Consequently, an attacker can bypass validation and execute a shell command.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2023-49235
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2023-49235 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in question pertains to the mishandling of debug information filtering in the libremote_dbg.so library on TRENDnet TV-IP1314PI devices running firmware version 5.5.3 200714. This issue allows an attacker to bypass validation mechanisms and execute arbitrary shell commands, leading to potential remote code execution (RCE).
Severity Evaluation:
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Impact: High
- Exploitability: High
The high CVSS score indicates a critical vulnerability that can be easily exploited with severe consequences. The ability to execute arbitrary shell commands can lead to full system compromise, data exfiltration, and further lateral movement within the network.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Remote Exploitation: An attacker can exploit this vulnerability over the network, potentially without requiring authentication.
- Local Exploitation: If an attacker gains local access to the device, they can exploit the vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute commands.
Exploitation Methods:
- Command Injection: By crafting specific input that bypasses the filtering mechanism, an attacker can inject malicious commands.
- Shell Command Execution: The use of
popenwithout proper sanitization allows the execution of shell commands, which can be leveraged to run arbitrary code.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- TRENDnet TV-IP1314PI devices
Affected Software Versions:
- Firmware version 5.5.3 200714
It is crucial to identify all devices running the affected firmware version and prioritize their remediation.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
- Firmware Update: Immediately update the firmware to a patched version provided by TRENDnet.
- Network Segmentation: Isolate affected devices from critical network segments to limit potential lateral movement.
- Access Control: Implement strict access controls and authentication mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access.
- Monitoring and Logging: Enhance monitoring and logging to detect any suspicious activities or attempts to exploit the vulnerability.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to detect and alert on any unusual network traffic or command execution attempts.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of this vulnerability highlights the importance of secure coding practices and thorough testing, especially for IoT devices. The potential for remote code execution in such devices can have severe implications for both individual users and organizations, including:
- Data Breaches: Sensitive information can be exfiltrated.
- Network Compromise: Attackers can use compromised devices as entry points for further attacks within the network.
- Reputation Damage: Organizations relying on affected devices may face reputational damage due to security breaches.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Library:
libremote_dbg.so - Function:
popen - Issue: Insufficient filtering of debug information leading to command injection.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify Target: Locate TRENDnet TV-IP1314PI devices running the vulnerable firmware.
- Craft Payload: Develop a payload that bypasses the filtering mechanism and injects a malicious command.
- Execute Payload: Send the crafted payload to the device, triggering the execution of the injected command.
Detection and Response:
- Indicators of Compromise (IoCs): Monitor for unusual network traffic, unexpected command executions, and unauthorized access attempts.
- Incident Response: Follow incident response procedures to contain, eradicate, and recover from any detected exploitation attempts.
