Description
A vulnerability in the parisneo/lollms-webui version 9.3 allows attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and execute arbitrary code. The issue arises from the application's handling of the `/execute_code` endpoint, which is intended to be blocked from external access by default. However, attackers can exploit the `/update_setting` endpoint, which lacks proper access control, to modify the `host` configuration at runtime. By changing the `host` setting to an attacker-controlled value, the restriction on the `/execute_code` endpoint can be bypassed, leading to remote code execution. This vulnerability is due to improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command (`Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command`).
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-2359
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-2359 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in parisneo/lollms-webui version 9.3 is critical due to its high CVSS score of 9.8. This score indicates a severe risk, primarily because it allows attackers to bypass access restrictions and execute arbitrary code remotely. The vulnerability arises from improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command, which can be exploited to achieve remote code execution (RCE).
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Unauthorized Access to
/update_settingEndpoint: Attackers can exploit the/update_settingendpoint, which lacks proper access control, to modify thehostconfiguration. - Bypassing Restrictions on
/execute_codeEndpoint: By changing thehostsetting to an attacker-controlled value, the restriction on the/execute_codeendpoint can be bypassed, allowing for RCE.
Exploitation Methods:
- Modification of
hostConfiguration: Attackers can send a crafted request to the/update_settingendpoint to change thehostsetting. - Execution of Arbitrary Code: Once the
hostsetting is modified, attackers can send requests to the/execute_codeendpoint, which will now accept and execute arbitrary code.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- parisneo/lollms-webui version 9.3
Affected Systems:
- Any system running the vulnerable version of parisneo/lollms-webui.
- Systems that have the
/update_settingand/execute_codeendpoints exposed to external networks.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Mitigation:
- Patching: Upgrade to a patched version of parisneo/lollms-webui that addresses this vulnerability.
- Access Control: Implement strict access controls on the
/update_settingand/execute_codeendpoints to prevent unauthorized access. - Network Segmentation: Ensure that the application is not exposed to external networks unnecessarily.
Long-Term Mitigation:
- Code Review: Conduct a thorough code review to identify and fix similar vulnerabilities.
- Input Validation: Implement robust input validation and sanitization to neutralize special elements used in OS commands.
- Regular Updates: Keep the software up to date with the latest security patches.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Immediate Impact:
- RCE Risks: Organizations using the affected software are at high risk of RCE attacks, which can lead to data breaches, system compromises, and other severe security incidents.
- Operational Disruption: Successful exploitation can disrupt operations and lead to significant downtime.
Long-Term Impact:
- Increased Awareness: This vulnerability highlights the importance of proper access control and input validation in web applications.
- Enhanced Security Practices: The incident may prompt organizations to review and enhance their security practices, particularly around endpoint protection and access control.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Endpoint Vulnerabilities: The
/update_settingendpoint lacks proper access control, allowing attackers to modify critical settings. - Command Injection: The
/execute_codeendpoint is vulnerable to command injection due to improper neutralization of special elements.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify Target: Identify systems running parisneo/lollms-webui version 9.3.
- Modify
hostSetting: Send a crafted request to the/update_settingendpoint to change thehostsetting to an attacker-controlled value. - Execute Arbitrary Code: Send a request to the
/execute_codeendpoint with the payload to execute arbitrary code.
Detection and Monitoring:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual activity related to the
/update_settingand/execute_codeendpoints. - Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Implement IDS to detect and alert on suspicious requests to these endpoints.
- Behavioral Analysis: Use behavioral analysis tools to detect anomalous behavior that may indicate an exploitation attempt.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-2359 represents a critical vulnerability that requires immediate attention. Organizations should prioritize patching and implementing robust security measures to mitigate the risk of exploitation. The incident underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and proactive security practices to protect against similar threats in the future.
