Description
The Network Summary plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 'category' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.0.11 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-2804
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-2804 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in the Network Summary plugin for WordPress allows for SQL Injection via the 'category' parameter. This is due to insufficient escaping of user-supplied input and inadequate preparation of SQL queries. The high CVSS score of 9.8 indicates a critical vulnerability, reflecting the potential for unauthenticated attackers to extract sensitive information from the database.
Severity Evaluation:
- Confidentiality Impact: High
- Integrity Impact: High
- Availability Impact: Medium
The vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potential data manipulation, and disruption of services, making it a high-priority issue for immediate remediation.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Unauthenticated SQL Injection: Attackers can exploit the vulnerability without needing to authenticate, making it a significant risk.
- Data Exfiltration: By injecting malicious SQL queries, attackers can extract sensitive information such as user credentials, personal data, and other confidential information.
- Database Manipulation: Attackers can alter database entries, leading to data integrity issues.
Exploitation Methods:
- Manual Exploitation: Attackers can manually craft SQL injection payloads targeting the 'category' parameter.
- Automated Tools: Use of automated SQL injection tools to identify and exploit the vulnerability.
- Phishing Campaigns: Combining SQL injection with phishing to lure users into visiting malicious links that exploit the vulnerability.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- Network Summary plugin for WordPress
- All versions up to and including 2.0.11
Affected Systems:
- WordPress installations using the Network Summary plugin versions up to 2.0.11.
- Any system or application that integrates with the affected plugin and processes the 'category' parameter.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Update the Plugin: Ensure the Network Summary plugin is updated to a version that addresses the vulnerability.
- Disable the Plugin: If an update is not available, consider disabling the plugin until a fix is released.
- Input Validation: Implement additional input validation and sanitization for the 'category' parameter.
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy a WAF to detect and block SQL injection attempts.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Regular Audits: Conduct regular security audits and code reviews to identify and mitigate similar vulnerabilities.
- Security Training: Provide training for developers on secure coding practices, focusing on input validation and SQL query preparation.
- Patch Management: Establish a robust patch management process to ensure timely updates and patches for all plugins and software.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of CVE-2024-2804 highlights the ongoing challenge of securing web applications, particularly those built on popular platforms like WordPress. The vulnerability underscores the importance of:
- Proactive Security Measures: Continuous monitoring and proactive security measures to detect and mitigate vulnerabilities.
- Community Collaboration: Collaboration between security researchers, plugin developers, and the broader cybersecurity community to share threat intelligence and best practices.
- User Awareness: Increasing user awareness about the risks associated with outdated plugins and the importance of regular updates.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Location: The vulnerability is located in the
class-network-summary.phpfile at line 225. - Code Issue: Insufficient escaping of the 'category' parameter and lack of prepared statements in SQL queries.
Mitigation Code Example:
// Vulnerable code
$query = "SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE category = '" . $_GET['category'] . "'";
// Secure code using prepared statements
$category = $_GET['category'];
$stmt = $wpdb->prepare("SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE category = %s", $category);
$results = $wpdb->get_results($stmt);
Detection Methods:
- Static Code Analysis: Use static analysis tools to identify insecure coding practices.
- Dynamic Analysis: Implement dynamic analysis tools to detect SQL injection attempts in real-time.
- Log Monitoring: Monitor logs for unusual SQL query patterns that may indicate an injection attempt.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-2804 represents a critical vulnerability that requires immediate attention. By understanding the technical details and implementing the recommended mitigation strategies, organizations can significantly reduce the risk of exploitation and protect their sensitive data. Continuous vigilance and proactive security measures are essential to safeguard against such vulnerabilities in the future.
