Description
Judge0 is an open-source online code execution system. The application does not account for symlinks placed inside the sandbox directory, which can be leveraged by an attacker to write to arbitrary files and gain code execution outside of the sandbox. When executing a submission, Judge0 writes a `run_script` to the sandbox directory. The security issue is that an attacker can create a symbolic link (symlink) at the path `run_script` before this code is executed, resulting in the `f.write` writing to an arbitrary file on the unsandboxed system. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to overwrite scripts on the system and gain code execution outside of the sandbox.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-28185
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-28185
Description:
Judge0, an open-source online code execution system, contains a critical vulnerability where it fails to properly handle symbolic links (symlinks) within the sandbox directory. This oversight allows an attacker to manipulate the run_script path, leading to arbitrary file writes and code execution outside the sandbox environment.
CVSS Score: 10
Severity Evaluation: The CVSS score of 10 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is due to the potential for complete system compromise, including arbitrary code execution and data manipulation, which can lead to significant security breaches.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Symlink Manipulation: An attacker can create a symlink at the
run_scriptpath within the sandbox directory, redirecting thef.writeoperation to an arbitrary file on the unsandboxed system. - Code Injection: By overwriting critical system scripts or configuration files, an attacker can inject malicious code, leading to unauthorized actions or data exfiltration.
- Privilege Escalation: If the Judge0 service runs with elevated privileges, an attacker can escalate their privileges to gain full control over the system.
Exploitation Methods:
- Symlink Creation: An attacker submits a code snippet that creates a symlink pointing to a critical system file.
- File Overwrite: The attacker then submits another code snippet that writes malicious content to the
run_scriptpath, effectively overwriting the targeted system file. - Execution of Malicious Code: The overwritten file is executed, leading to arbitrary code execution and potential system compromise.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Systems running Judge0 version 1.13.0 and potentially earlier versions.
- Any environment where Judge0 is deployed, including cloud-based and on-premises installations.
Software Versions:
- Judge0 v1.13.0 and earlier versions are likely affected.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Mitigation:
- Patch Deployment: Apply the latest security patches provided by the Judge0 maintainers.
- Symlink Restriction: Implement strict controls to prevent the creation of symlinks within the sandbox directory.
- File Integrity Monitoring: Use file integrity monitoring tools to detect and alert on unauthorized changes to critical system files.
Long-Term Mitigation:
- Code Review: Conduct a thorough code review to identify and mitigate similar vulnerabilities.
- Sandbox Enhancements: Enhance the sandboxing mechanism to ensure that all operations are strictly confined within the sandbox environment.
- Least Privilege Principle: Ensure that Judge0 runs with the least privileges necessary to minimize the impact of potential exploits.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Immediate Impact:
- Organizations using Judge0 are at risk of severe security breaches, including data theft, unauthorized access, and system compromise.
- The vulnerability highlights the importance of robust sandboxing mechanisms and the dangers of improper symlink handling.
Long-Term Impact:
- Increased awareness of sandboxing vulnerabilities and the need for comprehensive security audits.
- Potential shift towards more secure code execution environments and stricter access controls.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- The vulnerability arises from the lack of proper symlink handling in the
isolate_job.rbfile, specifically around lines 197-201. - The
f.writeoperation does not validate the target path, allowing an attacker to redirect the write operation to any file on the system.
Code Snippet Analysis:
# isolate_job.rb (lines 197-201)
File.open(run_script_path, 'w') do |f|
f.write(run_script_content)
end
- The
run_script_pathis not validated for symlinks, allowing an attacker to manipulate the path.

Conclusion: CVE-2024-28185 represents a critical vulnerability in Judge0 that can lead to severe security breaches. Immediate patching and long-term mitigation strategies are essential to protect affected systems. This vulnerability underscores the importance of robust sandboxing and thorough security audits in code execution environments.
