Description
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities exist in the nas.cgi add_dir() functionality of Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505. A specially crafted HTTP request can lead to permission bypass. An attacker can make an authenticated HTTP request to trigger these vulnerabilities.A directory traversal vulnerability exists within the `disk_part` POST parameter.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-39787
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-39787 CVSS Score: 9.1
The CVSS score of 9.1 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is due to the potential for significant impact, including unauthorized access to sensitive information and system compromise. The vulnerability involves multiple directory traversal issues in the nas.cgi add_dir() functionality of the Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505 firmware. Directory traversal vulnerabilities allow attackers to access files and directories that are stored outside the intended directory, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive files and system configurations.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Authenticated HTTP Requests: An attacker with valid credentials can craft a specially designed HTTP request to exploit the directory traversal vulnerability.
- POST Parameter Manipulation: The
disk_partPOST parameter is specifically vulnerable to directory traversal attacks.
Exploitation Methods:
- Crafting Malicious Requests: An attacker can send a malicious HTTP request that includes directory traversal sequences (e.g.,
../../) to access unauthorized directories. - Permission Bypass: By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can bypass permission checks and access sensitive files, potentially leading to further system compromise.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Device:
- Wavlink AC3000
Affected Firmware Version:
- M33A8.V5030.210505
Specific Functionality:
- The
nas.cgiadd_dir() functionality is the primary point of vulnerability.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Firmware Update: Ensure that the Wavlink AC3000 devices are updated to the latest firmware version that addresses this vulnerability.
- Access Control: Implement strict access controls to limit the number of users with administrative privileges.
- Network Segmentation: Segment the network to isolate critical systems and reduce the attack surface.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Regular Patch Management: Establish a regular patch management process to ensure that all devices are updated promptly.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to monitor for suspicious activities and potential exploitation attempts.
- Security Awareness Training: Conduct regular security awareness training for users to recognize and report suspicious activities.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Immediate Impact:
- Data Breach: Unauthorized access to sensitive files can lead to data breaches, exposing confidential information.
- System Compromise: Attackers can gain unauthorized access to the system, potentially leading to further exploitation and compromise.
Long-Term Impact:
- Reputation Damage: Organizations using affected devices may suffer reputational damage if a breach occurs.
- Increased Attack Surface: The presence of such vulnerabilities increases the overall attack surface, making it easier for attackers to find and exploit weaknesses.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Directory Traversal: The vulnerability allows an attacker to traverse directories and access files outside the intended directory.
- Affected Parameter: The
disk_partPOST parameter is vulnerable to directory traversal attacks.
Exploitation Example:
POST /nas.cgi HTTP/1.1
Host: vulnerable-device.local
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
Content-Length: 50
disk_part=../../../../etc/passwd
Detection and Monitoring:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual access patterns and directory traversal attempts.
- File Integrity Monitoring: Implement file integrity monitoring to detect unauthorized changes to critical files.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-39787 represents a critical vulnerability that can lead to significant security risks. Immediate mitigation strategies, including firmware updates and strict access controls, are essential to protect against potential exploitation. Long-term strategies, such as regular patch management and security awareness training, are crucial for maintaining a robust cybersecurity posture.
