Description
Multiple external config control vulnerabilities exists in the openvpn.cgi openvpn_server_setup() functionality of Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505. A specially crafted HTTP request can lead to arbitrary command execution. An attacker can make an authenticated HTTP request to trigger these vulnerabilities.A configuration injection vulnerability exists in the `sel_open_interface` POST parameter.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-39799
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-39799
Description: The vulnerability involves multiple external config control vulnerabilities in the openvpn.cgi openvpn_server_setup() functionality of the Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505. Specifically, a configuration injection vulnerability exists in the sel_open_interface POST parameter, which can be exploited via a specially crafted HTTP request to achieve arbitrary command execution.
CVSS Score: 9.1
Severity Evaluation:
- Critical: The CVSS score of 9.1 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is due to the potential for arbitrary command execution, which can lead to complete system compromise.
- Impact: The vulnerability allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the affected device, potentially leading to unauthorized access, data breaches, and further lateral movement within the network.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Authenticated HTTP Request: An attacker needs to be authenticated to exploit this vulnerability. This could be achieved through credential theft, brute-forcing, or exploiting other vulnerabilities that provide access to valid credentials.
- Configuration Injection: The attacker can inject malicious configurations through the
sel_open_interfacePOST parameter, leading to arbitrary command execution.
Exploitation Methods:
- Crafted HTTP Request: The attacker sends a specially crafted HTTP request to the
openvpn.cgiendpoint, targeting theopenvpn_server_setup()function. - Command Injection: By manipulating the
sel_open_interfaceparameter, the attacker can inject commands that the system will execute, potentially leading to full control over the device.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505
Software Versions:
- The vulnerability specifically affects the firmware version M33A8.V5030.210505. Other versions may also be affected but have not been explicitly mentioned in the CVE details.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Patch Management: Ensure that the firmware is updated to the latest version provided by the vendor.
- Access Control: Implement strong authentication mechanisms and regularly update credentials to prevent unauthorized access.
- Network Segmentation: Isolate the affected devices from critical network segments to limit the potential impact of an exploit.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Regular Audits: Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate similar issues.
- Intrusion Detection: Deploy intrusion detection systems (IDS) to monitor for suspicious activities and potential exploitation attempts.
- User Education: Educate users on the importance of strong passwords and the risks associated with credential sharing.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Broader Implications:
- IoT Security: This vulnerability highlights the ongoing challenges in securing Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which are often deployed with minimal security features and infrequent updates.
- Supply Chain Risks: The vulnerability in a widely used device like the Wavlink AC3000 underscores the risks associated with supply chain security and the need for robust vendor management practices.
- Remote Workforce: With the increasing reliance on remote work, the security of home networking devices becomes critical, as they can serve as entry points for attacks on corporate networks.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Exploit Details:
- Endpoint:
openvpn.cgi - Function:
openvpn_server_setup() - Parameter:
sel_open_interface - Exploit Type: Configuration injection leading to arbitrary command execution
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual activities related to the
openvpn.cgiendpoint and theopenvpn_server_setup()function. - Behavioral Analysis: Implement behavioral analysis tools to detect anomalous command executions that may indicate an exploit attempt.
- Incident Response: Develop and maintain an incident response plan that includes steps for isolating affected devices, containing the threat, and restoring normal operations.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-39799 represents a significant risk to organizations using the affected Wavlink AC3000 devices. Immediate mitigation steps, including firmware updates and enhanced access controls, are essential to protect against potential exploitation. Long-term strategies should focus on improving overall IoT security practices and maintaining robust incident response capabilities.
