Description
Multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the qos.cgi qos_settings() functionality of Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505. A specially crafted HTTP request can lead to stack-based buffer overflow. An attacker can make an authenticated HTTP request to trigger these vulnerabilities.A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the `sel_mode` POST parameter.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-39803
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-39803 CVSS Score: 9.1
The vulnerability in question is a stack-based buffer overflow in the qos.cgi qos_settings() functionality of the Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505. This vulnerability is particularly severe due to its high CVSS score of 9.1, indicating a critical risk. The buffer overflow can be triggered by a specially crafted HTTP request, specifically through the sel_mode POST parameter.
Severity Evaluation:
- Confidentiality Impact: High
- Integrity Impact: High
- Availability Impact: High
The high CVSS score reflects the potential for significant damage, including unauthorized access, data corruption, and service disruption.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Authenticated HTTP Request: An attacker with valid credentials can send a maliciously crafted HTTP request to the vulnerable endpoint.
- Network Access: The attacker needs network access to the Wavlink AC3000 device to send the HTTP request.
Exploitation Methods:
- Buffer Overflow: By sending a specially crafted HTTP request with a malformed
sel_modePOST parameter, an attacker can overflow the buffer, leading to arbitrary code execution or a denial of service (DoS). - Code Execution: If the attacker can inject malicious code, they may gain control over the device, leading to further compromise of the network.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Wavlink AC3000 M33A8.V5030.210505
Software Versions:
- Firmware version M33A8.V5030.210505
It is crucial to identify all devices running the affected firmware version and prioritize their patching or mitigation.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Mitigation:
- Network Segmentation: Isolate the affected devices from critical network segments to limit potential damage.
- Access Control: Implement strict access controls to ensure only authorized users can access the device's management interface.
- Monitoring: Increase monitoring of network traffic to and from the affected devices to detect any suspicious activity.
Long-Term Mitigation:
- Firmware Update: Apply the latest firmware updates provided by Wavlink as soon as they are available.
- Patch Management: Implement a robust patch management process to ensure all devices are regularly updated.
- Security Audits: Conduct regular security audits to identify and mitigate similar vulnerabilities in other devices.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of this vulnerability highlights the ongoing risk posed by buffer overflow vulnerabilities in network devices. It underscores the importance of:
- Regular Security Audits: Continuous monitoring and auditing of network devices.
- Vendor Responsibility: Ensuring vendors prioritize security in their firmware development and release timely patches.
- User Awareness: Educating users on the importance of keeping their devices updated and implementing best security practices.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Vulnerable Component:
qos.cgiqos_settings()function - Trigger: Malformed
sel_modePOST parameter in an HTTP request - Impact: Stack-based buffer overflow leading to potential code execution or DoS
Detection and Response:
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Configure IDS to detect anomalous HTTP requests targeting the
qos.cgiendpoint. - Log Analysis: Regularly review logs for unusual activity, particularly authenticated requests to the
qos_settings()function. - Incident Response: Have a predefined incident response plan to quickly address any detected exploitation attempts.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-39803 represents a critical vulnerability that requires immediate attention from cybersecurity professionals. By understanding the technical details and implementing robust mitigation strategies, organizations can protect their networks from potential exploitation. Regular updates, strict access controls, and continuous monitoring are essential to maintaining a secure cybersecurity posture.
