Description
Xiaomi Pro 13 mimarket manual-upgrade Cross-Site Scripting Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphones. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the manual-upgrade.html file. When parsing the manualUpgradeInfo parameter, the process does not properly sanitize user-supplied data, which can lead to the injection of an arbitrary script. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current user. Was ZDI-CAN-22379.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-4405
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-4405 CVSS Score: 9.6
The vulnerability in question is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw that can lead to Remote Code Execution (RCE) on Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphones. The high CVSS score of 9.6 indicates a critical severity level, primarily due to the potential for remote code execution and the requirement for minimal user interaction.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Malicious Web Page: An attacker can host a malicious web page that, when visited by a user with a vulnerable Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphone, injects arbitrary scripts.
- Malicious File: An attacker can craft a malicious file that, when opened by the user, exploits the vulnerability.
Exploitation Methods:
- Injection of Arbitrary Scripts: The attacker can inject malicious scripts into the
manualUpgradeInfoparameter, which is not properly sanitized. - Remote Code Execution: By leveraging the XSS vulnerability, the attacker can execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially leading to full system compromise.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Systems:
- Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphones
Affected Software Versions:
- The specific version of the firmware or software that includes the vulnerable
manual-upgrade.htmlfile is not explicitly mentioned. However, it is implied that all versions of the Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphone software that include this file are affected.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Mitigation:
- Avoid Suspicious Links and Files: Users should be cautious about visiting unknown or suspicious websites and opening files from untrusted sources.
- Disable Automatic Updates: Temporarily disable automatic updates until a patch is released.
Long-Term Mitigation:
- Patch Management: Ensure that the device is updated to the latest firmware version as soon as a patch is released by Xiaomi.
- Web Application Firewalls (WAF): Implement WAFs to detect and block malicious input.
- User Education: Educate users about the risks of visiting unknown websites and opening untrusted files.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of this vulnerability highlights the ongoing challenge of securing mobile devices, particularly those with complex firmware and software ecosystems. The potential for remote code execution underscores the need for robust input validation and sanitization practices in all software development processes. This vulnerability also emphasizes the importance of timely patching and user education in mitigating risks.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Location: The vulnerability resides in the
manual-upgrade.htmlfile, specifically in the handling of themanualUpgradeInfoparameter. - Root Cause: Insufficient sanitization of user-supplied data allows for the injection of arbitrary scripts.
- Exploitation: An attacker can craft a malicious input that, when processed by the vulnerable component, executes arbitrary code.
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual activity related to the
manual-upgrade.htmlfile and themanualUpgradeInfoparameter. - Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Implement IDS to detect and alert on suspicious network traffic that may indicate an exploitation attempt.
- Incident Response: Have an incident response plan in place to quickly address any detected exploitation attempts.
Patching and Updates:
- Vendor Communication: Stay in communication with Xiaomi for updates on the release of a patch.
- Automated Updates: Ensure that automated update mechanisms are in place to apply patches as soon as they are available.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-4405 represents a significant risk to users of Xiaomi Pro 13 smartphones. Immediate mitigation strategies should focus on user education and caution, while long-term strategies should include robust patch management and enhanced security measures. The cybersecurity community should continue to emphasize the importance of secure coding practices and timely vulnerability disclosure and patching.
