Description
The Pie Register - Social Sites Login (Add on) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authentication bypass in versions up to, and including, 1.7.7. This is due to insufficient verification on the user being supplied during a social login through the plugin. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to log in as any existing user on the site, such as an administrator, if they have access to the email.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-4544
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-4544 CISA Vulnerability Name: CVE-2024-4544 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in the Pie Register - Social Sites Login (Add on) plugin for WordPress allows for authentication bypass due to insufficient verification of the user during a social login process. This vulnerability is critical, as indicated by its high CVSS score of 9.8. The severity is attributed to the potential for unauthenticated attackers to gain administrative access, leading to complete compromise of the affected WordPress site.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Unauthenticated Access: Attackers can exploit this vulnerability without needing any prior authentication.
- Email Access: The attacker needs to have access to the email address of the target user, which can be obtained through phishing, social engineering, or other means.
Exploitation Methods:
- Social Login Bypass: The attacker can initiate a social login process using the target user's email address. Due to insufficient verification, the attacker can bypass the authentication mechanism and log in as the target user.
- Administrative Privileges: If the target user is an administrator, the attacker gains full control over the WordPress site, allowing them to perform actions such as modifying content, installing malicious plugins, or exfiltrating sensitive data.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- Pie Register - Social Sites Login (Add on) plugin for WordPress
Affected Versions:
- Versions up to and including 1.7.7
Impacted Systems:
- Any WordPress site using the vulnerable versions of the Pie Register - Social Sites Login (Add on) plugin.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Update the Plugin: Ensure that the plugin is updated to a version that addresses this vulnerability. If a patch is not yet available, consider disabling the plugin until a fix is released.
- Monitor for Suspicious Activity: Implement monitoring to detect any unusual login attempts or administrative actions.
Long-Term Mitigations:
- Regular Updates: Maintain a regular update schedule for all plugins and the WordPress core to ensure that known vulnerabilities are patched promptly.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Implement MFA for all administrative accounts to add an additional layer of security.
- Access Controls: Limit administrative access to trusted users and implement the principle of least privilege.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of CVE-2024-4544 highlights the importance of robust authentication mechanisms in web applications. The vulnerability underscores the need for:
- Strong Verification Processes: Ensuring that all authentication processes include sufficient verification steps to prevent bypass.
- Regular Security Audits: Conducting regular security audits and code reviews to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities.
- User Education: Educating users about the risks of phishing and social engineering attacks to protect their credentials.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Insufficient Verification: The vulnerability arises from the plugin's failure to adequately verify the user during the social login process. This allows an attacker to supply the email address of any existing user and bypass authentication.
- Code Reference: The vulnerability is located in the
pie-register.phpfile at line 2959 in version 3.8.3.3 of the plugin.
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Review login logs for any unusual or repeated login attempts using social login features.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Implement IDS to detect and alert on suspicious login activities.
- Incident Response Plan: Develop and maintain an incident response plan to quickly address any detected exploitation attempts.
