An OS command injection vulnerability has been reported to affect several product versions. If exploited, the vulnerability could allow remote attackers to execute commands. We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following version: QuRouter 2.4.3.103 and later
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-48860
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-48860 Description: An OS command injection vulnerability has been reported to affect several product versions. If exploited, the vulnerability could allow remote attackers to execute commands. CVSS Score: 9.8
Severity Evaluation: The CVSS score of 9.8 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is likely due to the potential for remote code execution, which can lead to complete system compromise. The vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the affected system, posing a significant risk to the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the system.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Remote Exploitation: Attackers can exploit this vulnerability over the network, making it a high-risk vector.
- Web Interface: If the affected product has a web interface, attackers could inject malicious commands through input fields.
- API Endpoints: Unsanitized input in API endpoints could be used to inject commands.
Exploitation Methods:
- Command Injection: Attackers can inject OS commands through vulnerable input fields or parameters.
- Payload Delivery: Malicious payloads can be delivered and executed, leading to further compromise.
- Privilege Escalation: If the vulnerable service runs with elevated privileges, attackers can gain higher access levels.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Product:
- QuRouter
Affected Versions:
- All versions prior to 2.4.3.103
Fixed Version:
- QuRouter 2.4.3.103 and later
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Patching: Upgrade to QuRouter version 2.4.3.103 or later immediately.
- Network Segmentation: Isolate affected devices from critical networks to limit potential damage.
- Input Validation: Implement strict input validation and sanitization for all user inputs.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Regular Updates: Ensure that all systems are regularly updated and patched.
- Security Audits: Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments.
- Intrusion Detection: Deploy intrusion detection systems (IDS) to monitor for suspicious activities.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Immediate Impact:
- System Compromise: Affected systems can be fully compromised, leading to data breaches, service disruptions, and unauthorized access.
- Lateral Movement: Attackers can use compromised systems to move laterally within the network, affecting other systems.
Long-Term Impact:
- Reputation Damage: Organizations using affected products may suffer reputational damage if a breach occurs.
- Compliance Issues: Non-compliance with security standards and regulations can result in legal and financial penalties.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Type: OS Command Injection
- Cause: Insufficient input validation and sanitization
- Exploitability: High, due to the ability to execute arbitrary commands remotely
Detection Methods:
- Log Analysis: Monitor system logs for unusual command executions.
- Behavioral Analysis: Use behavioral analysis tools to detect anomalous activities.
- Signature-Based Detection: Implement signature-based detection for known exploit patterns.
Mitigation Techniques:
- Least Privilege: Ensure that services run with the least privilege necessary.
- Secure Coding Practices: Adopt secure coding practices to prevent similar vulnerabilities in future developments.
- Regular Patching: Implement a robust patch management process to apply updates promptly.
