Description
The MStore API – Create Native Android & iOS Apps On The Cloud plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authentication bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.14.7. This is due to insufficient verification on the 'phone' parameter of the 'firebase_sms_login' and 'firebase_sms_login_v2' functions. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to log in as any existing user on the site, such as an administrator, if they have access to the email address or phone number. Additionally, if a new email address is supplied, a new user account is created with the default role, even if registration is disabled.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-6328
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-6328
Description: The MStore API – Create Native Android & iOS Apps On The Cloud plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authentication bypass due to insufficient verification on the 'phone' parameter of the 'firebase_sms_login' and 'firebase_sms_login_v2' functions. This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to log in as any existing user, including administrators, if they have access to the email address or phone number. Additionally, if a new email address is supplied, a new user account is created with the default role, even if registration is disabled.
CVSS Score: 9.8
Severity Evaluation:
- Critical: The CVSS score of 9.8 indicates a critical vulnerability. The potential for unauthenticated attackers to gain administrative access or create new user accounts poses a significant risk to the integrity and security of affected systems.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Authentication Bypass: An attacker can exploit the vulnerability to bypass authentication mechanisms by manipulating the 'phone' parameter in the 'firebase_sms_login' and 'firebase_sms_login_v2' functions.
- User Account Creation: If a new email address is supplied, the attacker can create a new user account with default privileges, even if user registration is disabled.
Exploitation Methods:
- Unauthenticated Access: Attackers can send crafted requests to the vulnerable endpoints, bypassing the authentication process and gaining access to user accounts.
- Privilege Escalation: By logging in as an administrator, attackers can perform actions with elevated privileges, such as modifying site content, installing malicious plugins, or exfiltrating sensitive data.
- Account Creation: Attackers can create new user accounts with default roles, potentially leading to further unauthorized access or data breaches.
