Description
An arbitrary file overwrite vulnerability exists in the ZulipConnector of danswer-ai/danswer, affecting the latest version. The vulnerability arises from the load_credentials method, where user-controlled input for realm_name and zuliprc_content is used to construct file paths and write file contents. This allows attackers to overwrite or create arbitrary files if a zuliprc- directory already exists in the temporary directory.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2024-7957
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2024-7957 CVSS Score: 9.1
The vulnerability in question is an arbitrary file overwrite issue in the ZulipConnector of the danswer-ai/danswer software. The load_credentials method inappropriately handles user-controlled input for realm_name and zuliprc_content, allowing attackers to construct file paths and write file contents. This can lead to the overwriting or creation of arbitrary files if a zuliprc- directory exists in the temporary directory.
Severity Evaluation: The CVSS score of 9.1 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is due to the potential for significant impact, including data integrity violations, unauthorized access, and system compromise.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Remote Exploitation: An attacker could exploit this vulnerability remotely by sending crafted input to the
load_credentialsmethod. - Local Privilege Escalation: If an attacker has limited access to the system, they could use this vulnerability to escalate privileges by overwriting critical system files.
- Data Manipulation: Attackers could overwrite configuration files, logs, or other critical files to disrupt services or gain unauthorized access.
Exploitation Methods:
- File Path Manipulation: By manipulating the
realm_nameandzuliprc_contentinputs, an attacker can construct file paths that point to sensitive locations. - Arbitrary File Creation: The attacker can create new files with malicious content, potentially leading to code execution or data exfiltration.
- File Overwriting: Overwriting existing files can disrupt system functionality, alter configurations, or inject malicious code.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- danswer-ai/danswer (latest version as of the vulnerability report)
Affected Systems:
- Any system running the affected version of danswer-ai/danswer, particularly those with a
zuliprc-directory in the temporary directory.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
- Immediate Patching: Apply the official patch or update from the vendor as soon as it becomes available.
- Input Validation: Implement strict input validation and sanitization for
realm_nameandzuliprc_contentto prevent path manipulation. - Least Privilege Principle: Ensure that the application runs with the least privileges necessary to minimize the impact of potential exploits.
- File System Monitoring: Monitor the temporary directory and other critical directories for unauthorized file creation or modification.
- Regular Audits: Conduct regular security audits and code reviews to identify and mitigate similar vulnerabilities.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
This vulnerability highlights the importance of secure coding practices, particularly in handling user-controlled input. It underscores the need for robust input validation, secure file handling, and regular security audits. The high CVSS score indicates the potential for significant damage, emphasizing the urgency for organizations to address and mitigate such vulnerabilities promptly.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Component: ZulipConnector
- Method:
load_credentials - Inputs:
realm_name,zuliprc_content - Condition: Existence of a
zuliprc-directory in the temporary directory
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify Target: Locate a system running the vulnerable version of danswer-ai/danswer.
- Craft Input: Construct malicious input for
realm_nameandzuliprc_contentto target specific files. - Send Input: Send the crafted input to the
load_credentialsmethod. - Verify Exploit: Check the temporary directory for the creation or modification of the targeted files.
Detection and Response:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual file creation or modification activities in the temporary directory.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to detect and alert on suspicious file operations.
- Incident Response: Have an incident response plan in place to quickly address and mitigate any detected exploits.
Conclusion: CVE-2024-7957 is a critical vulnerability that requires immediate attention. Organizations should prioritize patching and implementing robust security measures to protect against potential exploits. Regular security audits and adherence to best practices in secure coding will help mitigate similar vulnerabilities in the future.
