Description
oobabooga text-generation-webui trust_remote_code Reliance on Untrusted Inputs Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of oobabooga text-generation-webui. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the handling of the trust_remote_code parameter provided to the join endpoint. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied argument before using it to load a model. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the service account. Was ZDI-CAN-26681.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2025-12487
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2025-12487
Description: The vulnerability in the oobabooga text-generation-webui software arises from the improper handling of the trust_remote_code parameter in the join endpoint. This flaw allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code without requiring authentication.
CVSS Score: 9.8
Severity Evaluation:
- Critical: A CVSS score of 9.8 indicates a critical vulnerability. The high score is due to the potential for remote code execution (RCE) without authentication, which can lead to complete system compromise.
- Impact: The vulnerability can result in unauthorized access, data breaches, and system takeover.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Remote Code Execution (RCE): An attacker can send a specially crafted request to the join endpoint with a malicious
trust_remote_codeparameter, leading to arbitrary code execution. - Unauthenticated Access: The vulnerability does not require authentication, making it easier for attackers to exploit.
Exploitation Methods:
- Crafting Malicious Requests: Attackers can craft HTTP requests that include malicious code within the
trust_remote_codeparameter. - Automated Scripts: Attackers may use automated scripts to scan for vulnerable installations and exploit them en masse.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- oobabooga text-generation-webui
Affected Versions:
- Specific versions are not mentioned, but it is implied that any version prior to the patch (commit b5a6904c4ac4049823396090360b6f566f4e4603) is vulnerable.
Systems:
- Any system running the affected versions of oobabooga text-generation-webui, including servers and cloud instances.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Patching: Apply the latest patch from the official repository (commit b5a6904c4ac4049823396090360b6f566f4e4603).
- Disable Remote Code Execution: If patching is not immediately possible, disable the
trust_remote_codefeature.
Long-Term Strategies:
- Input Validation: Implement robust input validation to ensure that user-supplied arguments are properly sanitized.
- Authentication: Enforce authentication for all endpoints, especially those that handle sensitive operations.
- Regular Audits: Conduct regular security audits and code reviews to identify and mitigate similar vulnerabilities.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Broader Implications:
- Widespread Exploitation: Given the ease of exploitation and the critical nature of the vulnerability, widespread attacks are likely if not mitigated promptly.
- Supply Chain Risks: Organizations relying on oobabooga text-generation-webui as part of their supply chain may face increased risks of data breaches and system compromises.
- Reputation Damage: Companies affected by this vulnerability may suffer reputational damage and loss of customer trust.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Endpoint: The join endpoint in oobabooga text-generation-webui.
- Parameter:
trust_remote_code - Flaw: Lack of proper validation of the
trust_remote_codeparameter before using it to load a model.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify Target: Scan for systems running vulnerable versions of oobabooga text-generation-webui.
- Craft Request: Create an HTTP request with a malicious payload in the
trust_remote_codeparameter. - Send Request: Send the crafted request to the join endpoint.
- Execute Code: The malicious code is executed in the context of the service account, leading to arbitrary code execution.
Detection and Monitoring:
- Log Analysis: Monitor logs for unusual activity related to the join endpoint and the
trust_remote_codeparameter. - Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to detect and alert on suspicious network traffic.
- Behavioral Analysis: Use behavioral analysis tools to identify anomalous behavior that may indicate an exploitation attempt.
Conclusion: CVE-2025-12487 represents a significant risk to organizations using oobabooga text-generation-webui. Immediate patching and robust mitigation strategies are essential to prevent potential exploitation. Regular security audits and proactive monitoring can help mitigate similar vulnerabilities in the future.
