Description
5ire is a cross-platform desktop artificial intelligence assistant and model context protocol client. In versions 0.15.2 and prior, an RCE vulnerability exists in useMarkdown.ts, where the markdown-it-mermaid plugin is initialized with securityLevel: 'loose'. This configuration explicitly permits the rendering of HTML tags within Mermaid diagram nodes. This issue has not been patched at time of publication.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2025-68669
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2025-68669
Description: The vulnerability affects the 5ire cross-platform desktop artificial intelligence assistant and model context protocol client. Specifically, versions 0.15.2 and prior are susceptible to a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in the useMarkdown.ts file. The issue arises from the initialization of the markdown-it-mermaid plugin with securityLevel: 'loose', which allows the rendering of HTML tags within Mermaid diagram nodes.
CVSS Score: 9.6
Severity Evaluation:
- Critical: The CVSS score of 9.6 indicates a critical vulnerability. This high score is due to the potential for remote code execution, which can lead to complete system compromise.
- Impact: The vulnerability can be exploited to execute arbitrary code on the affected system, leading to data breaches, unauthorized access, and potential system takeover.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Malicious Input: An attacker can craft malicious Mermaid diagram nodes containing HTML tags that, when rendered, execute arbitrary code.
- Phishing: Users can be tricked into opening malicious Mermaid diagrams through phishing emails or other social engineering techniques.
- Supply Chain Attacks: Compromised third-party libraries or plugins can introduce malicious Mermaid diagrams into the system.
Exploitation Methods:
- HTML Injection: By injecting HTML tags into Mermaid diagram nodes, an attacker can execute JavaScript or other scripts that can manipulate the client-side environment.
- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): The vulnerability can be exploited to perform XSS attacks, leading to session hijacking, cookie theft, and other malicious activities.
- Remote Code Execution: The most severe exploitation method involves executing arbitrary code on the affected system, potentially leading to full system compromise.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- 5ire: Versions 0.15.2 and prior
Affected Systems:
- Cross-Platform Desktops: The vulnerability affects all desktop environments where 5ire is installed, including Windows, macOS, and Linux.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Mitigation:
- Disable the Plugin: Temporarily disable the
markdown-it-mermaidplugin until a patch is available. - Input Sanitization: Implement strict input sanitization to prevent the rendering of HTML tags within Mermaid diagram nodes.
- Update Software: Ensure that all software dependencies are up-to-date and monitor for any security advisories related to 5ire.
Long-Term Mitigation:
- Patch Management: Implement a robust patch management process to ensure timely updates and patches for all software components.
- Security Training: Conduct regular security training for users to recognize and avoid phishing attempts and other social engineering attacks.
- Network Segmentation: Segment the network to limit the spread of potential attacks and reduce the attack surface.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
Immediate Impact:
- Increased Risk: The vulnerability poses an immediate risk to organizations using 5ire, particularly those relying on the software for critical operations.
- Exploitation Potential: The high CVSS score and the nature of the vulnerability make it an attractive target for cybercriminals.
Long-Term Impact:
- Reputation Damage: Organizations affected by this vulnerability may suffer reputational damage and loss of customer trust.
- Regulatory Compliance: Failure to address this vulnerability may result in non-compliance with regulatory requirements, leading to legal and financial penalties.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- File:
useMarkdown.ts - Line: 156
- Plugin:
markdown-it-mermaid - Configuration:
securityLevel: 'loose'
Exploitation Steps:
- Craft Malicious Input: Create a Mermaid diagram node containing HTML tags with embedded malicious scripts.
- Deliver Payload: Deliver the malicious diagram to the target system through phishing, supply chain attacks, or other means.
- Execute Code: When the diagram is rendered, the embedded HTML tags execute the malicious scripts, leading to arbitrary code execution.
Detection and Response:
- Monitoring: Implement continuous monitoring for suspicious activities related to Mermaid diagram rendering and HTML tag execution.
- Incident Response: Develop an incident response plan specifically for RCE vulnerabilities, including containment, eradication, and recovery steps.
- Forensic Analysis: Conduct forensic analysis to identify the source of the attack and the extent of the compromise.
Conclusion: CVE-2025-68669 represents a critical vulnerability in the 5ire software that requires immediate attention. Organizations should prioritize mitigation strategies and closely monitor for any updates or patches from the software vendor. The potential for remote code execution makes this vulnerability a significant threat to cybersecurity, necessitating a proactive and comprehensive response.
