Description
The Premium Age Verification / Restriction for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file read and write due to the existence of an insufficiently protected remote support functionality in remote_tunnel.php in all versions up to, and including, 3.0.2. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to read from or write to arbitrary files on the affected site's server which may make the exposure of sensitive information or remote code execution possible.
Comprehensive Technical Analysis of CVE-2025-7401
1. Vulnerability Assessment and Severity Evaluation
CVE ID: CVE-2025-7401 CVSS Score: 9.8
The vulnerability in the Premium Age Verification / Restriction for WordPress plugin allows for arbitrary file read and write operations due to an insufficiently protected remote support functionality in remote_tunnel.php. This vulnerability is critical, as indicated by its high CVSS score of 9.8. The severity is attributed to the potential for unauthenticated attackers to read from or write to arbitrary files on the affected server, which can lead to sensitive information exposure or remote code execution.
2. Potential Attack Vectors and Exploitation Methods
Attack Vectors:
- Unauthenticated Access: Attackers can exploit the vulnerability without needing any credentials, making it a highly accessible attack vector.
- Arbitrary File Read: Attackers can read sensitive files such as configuration files, database credentials, or other critical data stored on the server.
- Arbitrary File Write: Attackers can write to arbitrary files, potentially injecting malicious code or modifying existing files to execute unauthorized actions.
Exploitation Methods:
- Information Disclosure: By reading sensitive files, attackers can gain access to confidential information, which can be used for further attacks.
- Remote Code Execution (RCE): By writing to executable files or scripts, attackers can execute arbitrary code on the server, leading to full system compromise.
- Data Manipulation: Attackers can modify critical files to disrupt services, inject malicious content, or alter the behavior of the application.
3. Affected Systems and Software Versions
Affected Software:
- Premium Age Verification / Restriction for WordPress plugin
- All versions up to and including 3.0.2
Affected Systems:
- WordPress installations using the vulnerable plugin versions.
- Servers hosting WordPress sites with the affected plugin installed.
4. Recommended Mitigation Strategies
Immediate Actions:
- Update the Plugin: Ensure that the plugin is updated to a version that addresses the vulnerability. If a patch is not yet available, consider disabling the plugin temporarily.
- Disable Remote Support Functionality: If possible, disable the
remote_tunnel.phpfunctionality to mitigate the risk. - Implement Access Controls: Restrict access to the
remote_tunnel.phpfile to trusted IP addresses only.
Long-Term Mitigations:
- Regular Patch Management: Implement a robust patch management process to ensure all plugins and software are kept up-to-date.
- Security Audits: Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments on all plugins and third-party components.
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): Deploy IDS to monitor for suspicious activities and potential exploitation attempts.
- Web Application Firewalls (WAF): Use WAFs to filter and monitor HTTP traffic to and from the web application, blocking malicious requests.
5. Impact on Cybersecurity Landscape
The discovery of CVE-2025-7401 highlights the ongoing challenge of securing third-party plugins and components, particularly in widely-used platforms like WordPress. This vulnerability underscores the importance of:
- Vendor Accountability: Ensuring that plugin developers prioritize security and promptly address vulnerabilities.
- User Awareness: Educating users on the risks associated with third-party plugins and the importance of regular updates.
- Proactive Security Measures: Emphasizing the need for proactive security measures such as regular audits, patch management, and the use of security tools like WAFs and IDS.
6. Technical Details for Security Professionals
Vulnerability Details:
- Vulnerable Component:
remote_tunnel.php - Exploit Mechanism: The vulnerability arises from insufficient protection of the remote support functionality, allowing unauthenticated users to perform file read and write operations.
- Detection: Security professionals can detect exploitation attempts by monitoring for unusual access patterns to
remote_tunnel.phpand by implementing file integrity monitoring to detect unauthorized file modifications.
Mitigation Implementation:
- Code Review: Conduct a thorough code review of the plugin to identify and fix similar vulnerabilities.
- Access Control: Implement strict access controls and authentication mechanisms for any remote support functionalities.
- Logging and Monitoring: Enhance logging and monitoring capabilities to detect and respond to suspicious activities promptly.
Conclusion: CVE-2025-7401 represents a significant risk to WordPress sites using the Premium Age Verification / Restriction plugin. Immediate mitigation steps include updating the plugin, disabling the vulnerable functionality, and implementing strict access controls. Long-term strategies should focus on regular security audits, patch management, and the use of advanced security tools to protect against similar vulnerabilities in the future.
