For the first time, representatives of NSO Group, a manufacturer of spyware, have publicly named their government clients. In 2019, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan were identified as the governments behind the WhatsApp hacks using NSO's spyware. These attacks exploited a vulnerability in WhatsApp to install the Pegasus spyware on targeted devices. The impacts include the unauthorized surveillance of journalists, activists, and other targets.
