More than a decade ago, researchers from the antivirus company Kaspersky detected suspicious internet traffic that they believed was linked to a known governmental group, due to similar targeting and phishing techniques. They quickly realized that they had uncovered a much more advanced hacking operation, notably targeting the Cuban government. According to sources, this operation, known as Careto, was directed by the Spanish government.
